“In this state there is peace and repose, but there is simultaneously something else that is not contention and strife, for there is indeed nothing against which to strive. What, then, is it? Nothing. But what effect does nothing have? It begets anxiety. This is the profound secret of innocence, that it is at the anxiety.” (Søren Kirkegaard quotation)
Between the Lines is a visual interpretation of seven selected quotes from Søren Kierkegaard’s writings. The photographic collages consist of underwater photographs of dancers and photographs of Søren Kierkegaard’s original writings. The movements of the five dancers are choreographed in collaboration with choreographer Pipaluk Supernova.
Reading Kierkegaard’s texts particularly seven quotes stroke me personally. All seven quotes describe emotional states that we all recognise: anxiety, depression, joy and despair. I used the underwater photography to visualize the emotional state represented in Kierkegaard-quotes. When I was under water I experienced being in touch with a sort of essence; the dancers inner being – their soul. The character and emotion they communicated came across so clear – strong and pure. Their bodies were floating around in a dreamy space, which i tried to highlight in the strong contrasts.
